Whale Encounter Puerto Vallarta runs through Eco Explorer Vallarta.
This three-hour whale watching trip run by Eco Explorer Vallarta leaves from Marina Vallarta, a short hop from the airport and two blocks from the whale statue. There is no hotel pickup, so travellers make their own way to the dock at Proa 22 and check in there. The boat heads out into Banderas Bay, where the crew searches for humpback whales and whatever else the bay offers that morning.
The operation is small scale, with a maximum of 10 travellers per departure. The boat carries a hydrophone so guests can listen to whale song live through the water. Reviews again and again describe close sightings: mothers with calves, males competing for a female, breaching whales, dolphins, sea turtles and blue-footed boobies all appear in recent accounts.
Snacks such as granola bars, fruit, juice and water are provided on board, along with life vests. Alcohol is not served, since whale watching regulations forbid it, and breakfast is not included. A per-person government fee is paid separately. The tour suits most travellers who are comfortable on a small boat in open water, though it is not advised for pregnant guests or those with back problems, and toddlers are only allowed on private tours.
A few practical points come up repeatedly in the listing and in traveller reviews, and they shape how the three hours actually feel.
Common issues. The tour needs a minimum number of travellers to run, and one reviewer was moved from an afternoon departure to a morning one when numbers were low. Weather can also force a cancellation, in which case a different date or a full refund is offered. There is no hotel pickup, the trip is not wheelchair accessible, and it is not recommended for pregnant travellers or people with back problems. Toddlers cannot join public departures, only private ones.
The meeting point is Proa 22, Marina Vallarta, about five minutes from the airport and two blocks from the whale statue. Hotel pickup is not included. The tour ends back at the same spot.
Snacks, drinking water and juice, life vests, use of the hydrophone, whale watching government permits, and a conservation wrist band donation are all included. Breakfast, alcoholic drinks, gratuities, hotel pickup and a government fee of US$6.00 per person are not.
The trip runs for three hours from the marina. Reviewers describe it as a good short excursion to start the day.
Toddlers are not allowed on public tours, only private ones, and the boat is not wheelchair accessible. The listing also advises against the tour for pregnant travellers and those with back problems. Most other travellers can participate.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window no refund or changes are given. If the operator cancels for poor weather or low numbers, guests are offered a different date or a full refund.
Photo ID is mandatory at check in. Bring a poncho or waterproof clothing, since several reviewers got wet on the ride back, and be prepared to pay the per-person government fee separately from the booking.
